Understanding and using design principles allows you to communicate messages clearly and engage the audience.

Gestalt: Similarity: Elements that share similar attributes, such as color, shape, or size, are perceived as belonging to the same group. Proximity: Objects placed close to one another are seen as related or forming a group. Closure: The brain tends to complete incomplete shapes or patterns, filling in the missing parts. Continuation: The eye naturally follows a continuous line or path, even if elements intersect.

Scale refers to the relative size of elements in a design. Varying the scale can create visual interest, hierarchy, and emphasis. Larger elements tend to draw more attention, while smaller elements can be supporting or secondary.

Contrast involves creating differences between elements to make them stand out and grab attention. This can be achieved through variations in color, size, shape, texture, or typography. High contrast can add drama and impact to a design, while subtle contrast can provide a sense of harmony and balance.

Tension in design relates to the dynamic interplay between elements, often achieved through positioning, direction, or spatial relationships. Tension can create visual interest and guide the viewer's eye through the design.

Space refers to the area around, between, and within elements in a design. Proper use of space helps establish hierarchy, readability, and overall balance. It can also influence the perception of the design's openness or density.

Tips for success
Established clear hierarchy
Legibility, readability, and appropriate use of type styles.
Typography elements are integrated with the grid.
Appropriate line lengths, and readability.
Design principles such as Gestalt, Scale, Contrast, Tension, and Space.
Used a grid system. Consistency in column widths, gutter spaces, and alignment of elements.
Align elements to the grid lines and how proximity is maintained between related elements.

HOMEWORK

1_ Refine Tool kit (if needed)
2_ Refine Glyphs (refine any letters that are giving you trouble, craft (points and anchors, spacing). KERN as needed in illustrator
3_ Create 2 - 3 different behance posts and post them to Behance so you can get feedback next class. You can turn them on right before class starts if you are worried about your image and turn them off after crit. The more you do this weekend the less stress you will have Tuesday night (due Wed).
